Is there evidence the Imams directly sanctioned latom?

(Shaykh al-Tusi’s Tahdheeb al-Ahkam, vol 8, page 325)


The Fatimiyyat (daughters of Husayn) had beaten their chests and cheeks over al-Husayn ibn Ali. And upon this purpose, should cheeks and chests be beaten (i.e, by the believers)


وقد شققن الجيوب ولطمن الخدود الفاطميات على الحسين بن علي عليهما السلام، وعلى مثله تلطم الخدود وتشق الجيوب.


Chest beating is a form of jaz’ (grievance/mourning), as defined by Imam al-Baqir:


Narrated Jabir, on the authority of Abi Ja’far (peace be upon him). 


I [Jabir] said to him (the Imam): What is jaz’?


He said: The most extreme of jaz’ is the screaming of woe and wailing, the beating of the face and the chest, and the pulling of one’s hair..”

قالأشد الجزع الصراخ بالويل والعويل ولطم الوجه والصدر وجز الشعر من


And jaz’ is makrooh (disliked), except jaz’ for Husayn - which is rewarded:


إنّ البكاء والجزع مكروه للعبد في كلّ ما جزع، ما خلا البكاء والجزع على الحسين بن عليّ(عليهما السلام)؛ فإنّه فيه مأجور
